SEO and AI search: one foundation, two discovery journeys
A practical guide to what remains the same, what changes, and how to measure search visibility without buying into AI-search hype.
Buyers now move between traditional search results and generated answers. The useful response is not to replace SEO with a new acronym. It is to strengthen the shared foundation and measure the new journey separately.
01
The shared foundation
Search engines and answer engines both need to discover your pages, understand what your business does and find reasons to trust the information. Crawlable HTML, clear service definitions, useful content, consistent entity details and relevant external mentions still matter.
A site with thin service pages, unclear ownership and no evidence does not become authoritative because an llms.txt file or extra schema block was added. Technical clarity helps machines interpret content; it does not create the underlying expertise.
02
Where the journeys differ
Traditional SEO usually aims to earn a visible result and a click. AI search may answer the question directly, mention a provider without linking, or use multiple sources to create a shortlist. That changes both content design and measurement.
Useful AI-search content often includes concise definitions, clear comparisons, first-hand examples and statements that can be attributed without losing context. The same page must still persuade a human who arrives and wants to judge whether the provider is credible.
03
A sensible measurement baseline
Choose a stable set of buyer-style prompts, not vanity questions about your own brand. Record whether the business is mentioned, whether the description is accurate, which competitors appear and which sources are cited. Repeat the test using the same conditions.
Pair that visibility view with referral traffic, assisted conversions and direct enquiries that mention an AI tool. Prompt results fluctuate, so a single screenshot is evidence of one result—not a durable ranking.
04
What to do first
Fix crawlability and indexation. Give important services dedicated pages. Make the business entity unambiguous. Publish evidence and original experience. Earn relevant mentions outside your own site. Then test whether answer-engine visibility changes.
That sequence is less exciting than a guaranteed ChatGPT ranking. It is also more honest, more measurable and more likely to improve traditional search at the same time.
